Like old soldiers everywhere, they are fading away. But these soldiers have an incredible and sometimes shocking story to tell.

For these ageing veterans, who had seen some of World War Two’s most bitter fighting, it was time to place on record their own intensely human experiences of the conflict.

It is certainly not comfortable viewing. Secrets which had been bottled up for a lifetime were revealed, untold stories were told at last and memories which had been hidden away for sixty years were finally rekindled. These were facets of history’s most dreadful war which were being heard for the very first time.

The result is a remarkable personal record of Germany’s rise and fall from the inside; of how those who sent their armies out to conquer saw them crushed as the world united against them; of men who were seduced by the siren call of Hitler, only to pay a very heavy price.
