356 years before the Birth of Christ, Alexander The Great set out from his base in Macedonia, north of present-day Greece, to conquer the known world. He defeated the vast Persian Empire and destroyed its ruler, King Darius, before leading his army into India, where he routed the powerful Rajah, Porus. Forced to return to Babylon when his men tired of travelling and fighting, he died just a few weeks short of his 33rd birthday, the undisputed ruler of a vast Empire. How did he do it? What made his army invincible? Why were men prepared to follow him, quite literally, to the ends of the earth? This is the story of the real man. We explain his childhood influences and first blooding in battle, using 3d graphics we breakdown the brilliant tactics he used in his five great victories, at the River Granicus when he first established a bridgehead into Asia, at Issus where the Macedonians superior discipline defeated a much larger Persian army, at his one major siege - of the island fortress of Tyre in present day Lebanon - which he breached with a 1000-yard-long land bridge, constructed under fire; at Guagamela, where he again put Darius to flight – a flight that ended in Darius’ death, and finally at the River Hydaspes in India, where he defeated a fearsome army which included squads of fighting Elephants and armed chariots in its ranks. As we tell the story of his life, leading authorities on Alexander explain his motives, tactics and unique qualities, we also throw new light on the question of his sexuality and the theory that he believed he was a god. Find out what made Alexander unique and ask yourself if you would have followed him and died for his beliefs and ambitions. Alexander The Great – the unforgettable leader.
